The Ad Council and New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) - Get Ready NYC Campaign & Giveaway!

Do you have a plan for your family for a natural or man-made disaster? What about an “everyday” contingency plan, if an apartment fire, neighborhood power outage or a water main break happened? Would your family and friends be prepared and know where to meet up?

While many parents think they can simply “wing it” during a disaster, being the family’s first responder during an emergency takes more planning than one may realize. The Ready New York City campaign is designed to educate and empower both parents and all New Yorkers to prepare for and respond to emergencies, large or small.

Ready NYC is a site that provides tips on emergency preparedness and asks individuals to do three key things: First, get an emergency supply kit, second, make a family emergency plan, and third, be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and the appropriate response.

You can also find additional information on OEM’s Facebook page

, and even take the first step in making a plan by selecting and sharing your own meeting place using the Get Ready NYC: My Meeting Place Facebook application, which will be live on September 2.

Here are some of the highlights that will begin on September 2 and through the month of September, more information can be found here:
  • National Preparedness Month Kickoff in NY.
  • Launch of the Get Ready NYC: My Meeting Place Facebook application, which allows users to take the first step in making a plan by selecting and sharing your own meeting place with others. NYC Emergency Management Facebook Page
  • Lighting of the entire Empire State Building in yellow, which is the signature color of the ReadyNYC logo & program.

My children know to keep away from windows during storms. I make sure to keep nonperishable food, bottled water, flashlights and candles in the garage so that we are never without--hurricanes come with little warning!

We stock pile batteries, canned food, candles, waterproof matches, and a can opener. We also have battery operated fans, a small charcoal grill and a large cooler that can hold ice and food. We also make sure all our important documents are in one file folder and that we have items for our cat and dog packed such as food, bowls and collars with leash.

@Down Roads Less Traveled However, since my hubby is a meteorologist, we do have waterproof supply boxes in each of our closets with basic essentials that we update every four to six months. They contain, a change of clothes/shoes, enough water for each person for 3 days, "instant or canned food", and any extra medications one might need. Such as my oldest has asthma, so she keeps and extra inhaler in her box.
